You know Jim Creeggan as the goofy stand-up bassist with the Barenaked Ladies.
If you've been a fan since the beginning, then you'll remember his brother Andy, who left the band in 1995 to pursue a degree and other outlets for his musical interests.
Together they are The Brothers Creeggan, a poppy trio -- including percussionist Ian McLauchlan -- who will be at Zaphod Beeblebrox Friday night to celebrate the release of new album, Sleepyhead.
'INTO A VIBE'
"We're kind of taking off where we left off on the last one," said Andy of the fourth and tightest album he has recorded with brother Jim and second with McLauchlan. "We're gradually getting into a vibe. We're just getting more and more sure of ourselves."
Combining pop harmonies and jazzy instrumentation with arrangements that stem from their classically-trained minds, The Brothers Creeggan will embark on a tour that takes them across Canada and the U.S. this spring.
After big-time performances at the Super Bowl and Olympics as well as hosting the Junos with the rest of the Barenaked Ladies, Jim will kick it into high gear again and dedicate himself to TBC.
"They let the class clowns run the show this year," said Andy, who caught a few inside jokes in his brother's dialogue from the Junos.
"I'm still always amazed that he can get the energy to do this," said Andy of his Jim's commitment to The Brothers Creeggan. "Right now it's all-consuming."
Jim's antics and energy have given him the appearance of being wacky on stage and off, but is that a trait uniform in the Creeggan family?
"We both have our moments," said younger brother Andy. "But people think I'm the older one if that tells you anything.
"We're constantly balancing each other. We're damn lucky. We feel musically that we can just go 100% and not worry that the other can keep up."
