GOTHAM
Bauhaus
(Metropolis/Outside MET 150)
Last year's reunion tour was every goth-rocker's dream come true, not only because it was so unexpected, but also because these spooky Brits were still so vibrant and nervy 15 years after their apparent demise. Surely, it helped that the quartet didn't disintegrate but merely splintered, with singer Peter Murphy going solo and the other three members continuing to hone their collective chops under the Love and Rockets banner. This two-CD souvenir, recorded at the group's New York performance, finds Bauhaus in peak form: Murphy singing like David Bowie impersonating Boris Karloff (or possibly vice-versa); Daniel Ash's jagged guitar riffs scraping and screeching alongside David J's throbbing bass and Kevin Haskins' metronomic drumming. Early songs such as Terror Couple Kills Colonel and In Fear of Fear still sound wonderfully icy and menacing, like a rocked-up Joy Division minus the self-inflicted bloodletting, while the post-punk funk of Kick in the Eye, dubby psychedelia of She's in Parties and raucous covers of T. Rex's Telegram Sam and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust demonstrate the band's undervalued musicianship and versatility. This is the definitive Bauhaus live album, with better sound and performances than what's on 1982's Press The Eject and Give Me The Tape.
