It seems Beatlemania is still alive and well in Canada, as the Fab Four's latest compilation "LOVE" hit the top spot in the land this week.
"LOVE," which remixes and remasters 26 of the group's songs, debuted at No. 1 on sales of 34,000 copies, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.
It marks the second first-place debut for the Liverpool legends in the SoundScan era. The compilation "Beatles 1" checked in at No. 1 back in November of 2000 with sales of 54,000.
The group's achievement is even more impressive when you consider that the week's album chart includes six other debuts in the Canadian top 10 -- including four new entries landing in the first four chart positions.
Aside from The Beatles' debut at No. 1, Il Divo's third album "Siempre" premiered at No. 2 on sales of 32,000. U2's latest hits package "U218 Singles" (19,000) finished its first week of release at No. 3, followed by Rock Star Supernova's self-titled debut at No. 4.
The movement up top forced Josh Groban from the No. 1 position -- which he had held for two straight weeks -- down to No. 5.
Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come" came in at No. 6, Sarah McLachlan's "Wintersong" occupied the No. 7 spot, and the seasonal collection "MuchDance 2007" fell five rungs to No. 8.
The final two debuts in the Top 10 went to Loreena McKennitt's "An Ancient Muse" at No. 9, and Snoop Dogg's eighth disc "The Blue Carpet Treatment" at No. 10.
Other debuts in the Top 50 included Tupac's "2Pac's Life" at No. 19, Our Lady Peace's "A Decade" at No. 29, Andrea Bocelli's "Under the Desert Sky" at No. 30, Brand New's "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" at No. 35, Oasis' "Stop the Clocks" at No. 38, Killswitch Engage's "As Daylight Dies" at No. 40, Stefie Shock's "Vendredis" at No. 41, and Tom Waits' "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards" at No. 44.
In the U.S., Jay-Z came in at No. 1 with 680,000 copies sold, followed by Daughtry in second, "NOW 23" in third, The Beatles in fourth, and Snoop Dogg in fifth.
