BEAUTIFUL CREATURES
Beautiful Creatures
(Warner Bros.)

As easy as it is to see through a band like Beautiful Creatures, it's not so easy to dismiss them.

When everyone -- record labels, radio and video programmers, media, the public -- is looking for the next Guns N' Roses, this L.A.-based quintet is more than happy to step up and take its best shot.

And although that attempt includes borrowing unapologetically and gluttonously from the Big Book of Rock Cliches -- under "S" you'll find "sex," under "D" you'll find "drugs, and the devil," under ... -- there's still something to them that you can't help but enjoy.

Maybe it's BC's vocalist Joe Leste who fluctuates between all of the recent metal greats like AC/DC's Brian Johnson, KISS's Paul Stanley, and even Mother Love Bone's Andrew Wood.

Or maybe it's that the heavy guitar songs -- and even the metal piano ballad -- themselves are familiar enough (read: appropriated) to pass without too careful an inspection.

Or possibly it's just how straight the band plays the tattoos and black leather schtick, even as reality rages around their insular rock star world.

Whatever the case, Beautiful Creatures may not succeed in gunning for the Gunners, but it's an admirable shot at that.
