Album Review: Lou Bega

LADIES & GENTLEMAN
By DARRYL STERDAN

LADIES & GENTLEMAN
Lou Bega
(BMG)

The good news: There is no Mambo No. 6. The bad news: There's nothing as infectious as Bega's Latin-pop hit Mambo No. 5 on this odd followup to 1999's A Little Bit of Mambo.

Curiously combining Latin and Caribbean grooves and percussion with squealing synthesizers and thumping disco beats, Bega serves up a stylistically adventurous but oddly unsatisfying sonic mish-mash that falls somewhere between Kid Creole, Shaggy and Cher's Believe.

And if starting your album off with the 6,053rd cover of Louis Prima's Just a Gigolo isn't an admission you're out of fresh ideas, we'll eat Lou's hat. (More on Lou Bega)
