Tony Bennett hits No. 1 in Canada
By
Senior Editor, JAM! Showbiz

Legendary singer Tony Bennett crooned his way to the top spot on the Canadian album charts this week.

Bennett's "Duets: An American Classic," which includes guest vocals from Bono, Elton John, Paul McCartney and others, debuted at No. 1 on sales of over 21,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.

The album marks the first time Bennett has reached the top here -- his previous chart peak was 2001's "Playin' With My Friends," which checked in at No. 36.

Bennett's debut forced Diana Krall's "From This Moment On" (17,000) from No. 1 down to No. 2, and Justin Timberlake's ""FutureSex/LoveSounds" from No. 2 to No. 3.

Janet Jackson's "20 Y.O." had the second highest debut of the week at No. 4, Fergie's solo debut "Dutchess" slipped one position to No. 5, Jean Leclerc's "Mexico" dropped from No. 3 to No. 6, and John Mayer's "Continuum" continued to slide down the charts, falling from No. 5 to No. 7.

Alan Jackson's "Like Red on a Rose" premiered at No. 8, while James Blunt's "Back To Bedlam" and Nelly Furtado's "Loose" both fell two notches to No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Other notable debuts included Ludacris' "Release Therapy" at No. 11 and Scissor Sisters' "Ta-Dah" at No. 16.

In the U.S., Ludacris came in at No. 1, followed by Janet Jackson in second, Tony Bennett in third, Alan Jackson in fourth, and Justin Timberlake in fifth.
