THE ART OF ROMANCE
Tony Bennett
(Columbia-Sony)
There are many things the 78-year-old Bennett does well.
Singing. Painting. Charming the pants off anyone he comes into contact with.
And now, on his latest disc, the legendary crooner tries his hand at writing lyrics for the very first time in his 60-year-plus career .
All For You -- with music provided by hugely influential Parisian jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt -- finds Bennett whispering sweet nothings to his partner of 15 years, Susan Crow: "Now my world is so alive, my dreams came true/ You're the spirit that I need, it's all from you."
Elsewhere, he, his quartet and producer Phil Ramone dedicate themselves to covering bold new and old songs about romance with a legion of classic songwriters helping them: Johnny Mandel (Close Enough For Love, Little Did I Dream), Oscar Hammerstein/Jerome Kern (All In Fun), Alan and Marilyn Bergman (Where Do You Start), Johnny Mercer (I Remember You, Time To Smile), Harold Arlen/Truman Capote (Don't Like Goodbyes) and Stephen Sondheim (Being Alive).
On occasion, there is orchestral accompaniment, but for the most part, this is a stripped-down, intimate affair -- as it should be.
Bennett already played two nights at Roy Thomson Hall last month.
The voice maybe wasn't what it once was, but the style, charisma and charm were firmly intact -- as they are on his latest collection.
