Artist: Beyonce

Seeing red over baby Blue
By MICHAEL RECHTSHAFFEN, Special to QMI Agency

Jay-Z with wife Beyonce (WENN.COM)

For a while there, it was looking like the new year was off to a fairly inauspicious start.

Lindsay was still on track to complete her mandated segment of community service in time for her Jan. 17 progress hearing, and there's even a rumour of her playing the late Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime TV movie.

Then you had Charlie officially confirming earlier this week during a TV critics press tour that he's moved beyond his crazy "episode" as casting begins for his upcoming Anger Management TV series.

But then something happened that left us feeling a little blue. Blue Ivy, to be exact.

Yep, after an extended period of reasonable sanity where celeb newborn monikers were concerned, new parents Beyonce and Jay-Z had to go and open the crazy baby name floodgates once more.

The Ivy part is fine, but the second you put a Blue in front of it, you've got something that sounds like it belongs to Beyonce's fragrance line: "From the woman who brought you Heat, Heat Rush and Pulse, comes Blue Ivy, the scent of innocence!"

Of course, Beyonce's bouncing bundle of joy isn't the first baby to have that colour on its birth certificate.

Last year, Alicia Silverstone gave birth to a baby boy named Bear Blu, joining the similarly-hued Blue Angel (daughter of U2's The Edge) and Chaz Bono's half-brother Elijah Blue Allman.

Obviously, their daughter's name wasn't something that just fell from the, uh, sky -- it must have had some special meaning for the couple.

There's already been considerable speculation about Ivy and the fact that the number 4 (as in IV) has played a big part in the couple's lives.

Beyonce's b-day is on the 4th of September, Jay-Z's is the 4th of December and the two were married on the 4th of April (the fourth month of the year) in 2008.

And the title of Blue Ivy's mom's current solo CD just happens to be 4.

Blue, on the other hand, is trickier to decipher, although dad did release an acclaimed trilogy called The Blueprint and his favourite baseball team happens to have navy blue pinstripes on their uniforms.

Whatever the reason for the selection, we should also take into consideration the fact that when your mom's given name is Beyonce, chances are slim to none that you'll end up an Emma or Abigail.

At one brief point during her pregnancy, word on the street had it that the chosen name, be it a girl or boy, was going to be baby Jayonce.

What we do know for a fact is that Blue Ivy's last name is Carter, as in Jay-Z's real moniker, Shawn Carter.

While they were at it, we were secretly hoping that she'd have taken surname cue from her mom and answer to Blue Ivy Fierce.

Or BIF, for short.
