Album Review: Blige, Mary J.

THE BREAKTHROUGH
Blige breaks through
By -- Calgary Sun

Mary J. Blige
The Breakthrough
(Universal)

In the diva world, Mary J. Blige gets scant consideration these days thanks in large part to Mariah Carey's turnaround.

The Breakthrough should change that.

Because while flawed with the same sterility -- in material and production -- afflicting many R&B albums these days, the hip hop soul singer sounds fantastic, rejuvenated and at peace belting out these 16 emotionally upbeat tunes.

There are at least a half-dozen that could make the cut for singles, with the highlights being About You, with B.E.P.'s will.i.am, the refreshingly sweet 'n' lite Can't Get Enough and the stellar MJB Da MVP featuring The Game.

You can officially put Blige back in the diva debate.
