THINK TANK
By MIKE ROSS
THINK TANK Blur (EMI) Great - another frightfully clever British rock band trying to "reinvent" rock. The band perhaps best known for the "whoo-hoo" beer commercial comes up with an odd and interesting hit-and-miss record that the Bud-Lite people aren't likely to be clamouring for. The hits, so to speak, are wonderful - haunting melodies, innovative arrangements, thought-provoking lyrics, psychedelic moods. The misses are the result of pure cacophony inserted for no other conceivable reason than to infuriate listeners. Sometimes you get both in the same song. Blur lives up to its name by ranging wide from low-fi electronic excursions, as in the beautiful Caravan, to screaming, spitting noise rockers like We've Got a File On You. Think Tank is likely to have some people asking the same questions as they did when Radiohead lost their rockin' marbles. What is this deep-thinking, precious British lead singer muttering about? What's with all the weird noises? Do I even like this? Would it be better if I were high? Can I listen to it again to make sure? This is what you get when you don't play it safe. Track Listing
