Album Review: Boy George

ESSENTIAL MIX
By DARRYL STERDAN

ESSENTIAL MIX
Boy George
(London-Sire/Warner)

Our Boy goes from the Culture Club to the Night Club here, unveiling his new musical persona as a plate-spinning deejay. Really, he's as talented a plate-spinner as he was a singer -- once again, George gets by less on his abilities than on his undeniable style. There's no fancy turntable work on display here; George's deejay skills begin and end with rudimentary beat-matching (which, admittedly, is harder than it seems). But he makes up for it with decent song selection, flowing from oddball novelties like Boogie Macs' slinky Girl From Ipanema and Aldo Vanucci's I Warned You Baby to transfixing tracks like Vzions' Everybody Jump, creating a low-velocity soundtrack for the V.I.P. chillout room at your next rave. Essential? Hardly. But fun nonetheless.
