BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
Self titled album finally makes the scene
By ALLAN WIGNEY, Ottawa Sun

Broken Social Scene
Broken Social Scene
(EMI)

It's taken three albums to get to the obligatory self-titled debut, but that's kinda how Toronto's flexibly staffed Broken Social Scene operate.

Or, as they tell in so many words on this hearty sonic meal, "We won't be what you want to be."

Rather, they'll be many things -- something made easier by the availability of many voices. There's disco (Hotel), vintage indie-rock (Fire Eye'd Boy), pop (Swimmers) and much more.

Of course it's all presented with an ear to being as unpredictable as possible -- Think you've got the gist of It's All Gonna Break two minutes into the song? Think again.

Even in BSS's most radio-friendly moments, the band cannot resist the temptation to add a layer or two of discordant noise over the top.

And yes, that is a significant part of what makes Broken Social Scene so wonderful: Fourteen tracks that keep you guessing at every turn. Pop music never had it so good.
