UNDENIABLE
Lisa Brokop
(Cosmo Records)
Moving more into the Mary Chapin Carpenter side of hot country pop, or whatever you want to call it, Lisa Brokop's new album has a lot of energy that just might make it your favourite album in the world if you only own about 20 others.
I'm sitting on a few thousand, which makes me a little more jaded.
Never mind that, bud, Brokop's got a damn good voice, one she lets ride along on the swooping Timeless and I'd Like to See You Try. Sure, it reminds me of when Don Henley was just starting to take over the airwaves on MuchMusic, but common denominators are needed in music, otherwise it just can't be popular.
Given those limitations, bravo, Brokop. Your emotions are sincere, the production is heavy but not intrusive and you made an album basically as good as Shania Twain's, except that you aren't as naked, and you stayed away from the power drums. Lots of makeout songs on the journey from the couch to the floor.
And the Whiskey and Wine rock opera is about a topic all of us country folk love: drinking! So let's pour a glass, put this one on and be done with it.
