TRUNKS
The Brothers Creeggan
(Page-Oasis)

Jim and Andy Creeggan, the current bass player and former keyboardist for Toronto pop outfit Barenaked Ladies, do the brotherly love thing again on their third musical outing, which is in stores Tuesday.

And, for the most part, this 11-song collection recorded with drummer Ian McLauchlan, is a delicate and sweet-sounding effort that combines the best of folk and jazz with gentle lead vocals from both Jim and Andy.

At its best, it recalls a more poignant Ben Folds Five.

Highlights include the opening tracks Stuck, with some winning acoustic guitar-playing by Andy, and the jazzier Fondly Yours, which is bolstered by viola and piano.

Also good are the pretty and rootsy Lila (with Vancouver's Veda Hille supplying accordion accompaniment), Survey The Situation, There's A Melody and She Married A Cowboy.

Less effective are the more upbeat John's In The Fridge, which includes guitar by Kevin Hearn (Andy's replacement in the Barenaked Ladies), and the more experimental Goin' To The Forest.

The three album-ending jazzy instrumentals, Kitchen Dancin', Oo Yeah and a cover of Frank Loesser's Inchworm, are also an acquired taste.
