Michael Buble croons new Grammy tune
By JANE STEVENSON - Sun Media
Now that Canadian Grammy nominee Michael Buble has finally established he will indeed attend Sunday night's awards show in Los Angeles, don't expect him to actually enjoy the experience. At least the red-carpet part. "It's a huge honour to be recognized like that," said Buble, 31, who is up for best traditional pop vocal album for his live CD/DVD Caught In The Act. "But I'm telling you the truth -- yeah, I would love to win, but if I didn't have to show up for any of that stuff, I wouldn't. I would never show up on a red carpet -- they suck! Red carpets suck. It's a cluster----. "Your ego's getting smashed. You're walking up and you're thinking, 'Oh, God, they don't know me, they don't want to talk to me.' It's really intimidating. And I wonder sometimes, maybe if I get this big or if I do that, maybe I won't be nervous. But you know what? I will be." Buble's Grammy nomination is his second. He lost last year to his idol, Tony Bennett, for best traditional pop vocal album. He expects the same thing to happen on Sunday night, as Bennett's Duets: An American Classic is the odds-on favourite to win. Buble even performs one of the duets with Bennett on the album, "so I'll probably lose to myself, in a weird way. "I think it's the biggest record of (Bennett's) life. And I'm thrilled for Tony. It's a massive record. (It's) his 80th birthday." Buble will be going solo on Grammy night. His girlfriend, actress Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), is attending the BAFTAs -- the British Oscars -- the same night in London. Last month, he accompanied Blunt to the Golden Globes, where she was a double nominee and won for her role in Gideon's Daughter. "It was amazing. I guess I can imagine how my parents must have felt being at the Junos with me," Buble said in reference to last year's awards show, where he was the big winner. "When they called out (Blunt's) name, they just might have well said, 'Michael Buble' because I was going crazy. She was so calm. 'Oh, this is great.' And I was going, 'Don't you understand? You're 23 years old! You won a Golden Globe!' All night I kept saying. 'They can never take that away from you. You're a wonderful actor. You're a down-to-earth (person).' I was just so excited." And to celebrate? "We went to Taco Bell and spent $20," Buble said. "It doesn't sound like a lot, but you buy $20 worth of tacos, you're talking tummy aches for a couple of days." No parties with the stars afterward, then? "To be really honest, it's the opposite of our thing," Buble said. "It's the last thing I want, to be at an industry party with actors and other celebrities. A lot of them are wankers. "I met some really nice people at the Golden Globes that night, and I was also disappointed by some people. ... The people that were there, the A-list, they were nice people. ... It was those people that are just not quite where they want to be, and they seem to have something to prove and they have an attitude -- or handlers. You know, if Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can walk through by themselves, why do others have to have five bodyguards?" Arden defends Buble's change of mind Jann Arden has come to the defence of her friend Michael Buble over his recent Grammy flap -- and flip-flop. Buble made headlines across Canada a week ago when he told Canadian Press he would boycott the Grammy Awards because the award for which he is nominated -- best traditional pop album -- will not be given out during the live tele-cast. Later that day, he backtracked in an interview with Sun Media. Arden co-wrote the song Lost with Buble on his untitled new album, which hits stores May 1, and has also toured with him three times. She said he's only human. "We all make mistakes," said Arden, while in Toronto this week promoting her own new album Uncover Me. "Everyone jumped all over that. I've said so many weird things about the Junos and I've had the Canadian Idol people mad at me, I just think to not express any kind of an opinion is kind of lame. I don't blame him. It's an award that wasn't televised, and he said, 'Tony Bennett's probably going to get it anyway.' "Buble's a funny guy. He was probably joking around." Arden said Buble approached her to write together. "He brought this gorgeous melody to me -- we were somewhere on the road -- and he had a couple of words, and he said, 'I'd love you to write a lyric. But I don't want a sappy relationship song.' I said, 'You're f---ing talking to me? Like, are you crazy? That's all I can give you is a sappy relationship song!' "And he loved it. I brought it back to him, and I guess (producer) David Foster flipped out over it, and they've recorded it already. I can't wait for him to sell 10 million records, and then I'm retiring already!" |
