Album Review: David Byrne

LOOK INTO THE EYEBALL
By JANE STEVENSON

LOOK INTO THE EYEBALL
David Byrne
(Virgin)

On his latest solo collection, in stores Tuesday, the former Talking Heads frontman has struck a winning balance between warm percussive grooves and more austere sounding strings.

Byrne also remains thoroughly infatuated with the dance floor, offering up such funky numbers as UB Jesus ("Sunrise, I'm still dancing/Girlfriend, she's my champion"); The Great Intoxication, which opens with, "Who Disco? Who Techno? Who Hip-Hop? Who Be Bop?" and Like Humans Do with the credo, "I work & I sleep & I dance & I'm dead." There's also his first entire song in Spanish, Desconocido Soy.

He tackles breezy Philly soul on The Neighborhood -- "We got peace, love & monkey business" -- and keeps it short and sweet on such songs as The Revolution, Smile, Walk On Water and Everyone's In Love With You.

Byrne, who delivered a transcendent 45-minute showcase at The Guvernment during Canadian Music Week about a month ago, returns to play the Phoenix on Tuesday night.

He'll be using the same string sextet he used for that earlier performance. (More on: David Byrne).
