Double play
By ANIKA VAN WYK

John Berry is one peach of a guy and nothing complements him better than Deana Carter's Strawberry Wine.

This man with the crystal clear voice managed to connect with his audience even before he took the stage.

Berry entered the Jubilee Auditorium last night through the audience.

While he sang Livin' on Love via the headpiece mike, Berry shook the hands of his fans and asked them how they were doing; he even danced with a woman who presented him with a yellow rose.

One of Berry's biggest hits may be Your Love Amazes Me, but it's his voice that amazes us.

Every word he sings gives chills, especially in songs like Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She's Taken A Shine.

Watching him flirt with his backup singer/wife while singing his next single, I Will If You Will, was also very touching. He recorded the song with Patty Loveless.

Carter is the best of what has been labelled New Country.

This daughter of a famed Nashville guitarist knows how to find the balance between her pop and country influences. Her hip inflections, which have earned her comparisons to the Grammy-laden pop star Sheryl Crow, work well in such tunes as I've Loved Enough To Know and her next single, Count Me In.

Her smokey voice mixes equally well with her twang in such songs as Strawberry Wine and If This Is Love.

Though she was generous with her fan appreciation, one of the only other times she bantered with the crowd was when she introduced the title track of her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs For This?

Her sense of humor came through as she explained this song was her side of a story about a relationship gone bad.

"I don't hate men ... but, this time, guys -- you're busted."
