It's the album so nice they issued it twice. In 1999, Toronto alt-country siblings Andrew and Peter Cash pressed the indie disc Raceway. Its jangly hooks, moody melodicism and tight harmonies caught the ears of roots label Rounder, who reissued it this year in the U.S. with this new title and a few new tracks. So, then, what we have here is the major-label Canadian version of the U.S. release of a two-year-old Canadian indie CD. Oh, yeah, and the Canuck disc has four bonus tracks -- one lifted from the pair's new indie CD Phonebooth Tornado. Confused? Well, never mind. Just know this -- the Cash boys are damn fine singers and better songwriters, and tunes like Raceway (a spare, Pink Floydish brooder), Guitar Strings and Foolish Things (plucky Simon & Garfunkel folk), Dream Away (some dark piano-pop) and Saturday in June (a shot of Everly Brothers harmony and innocence) are some of their finest moments -- no matter where they come from.
