Album Review: Chapman, Tracy

TELLING STORIES
By MIKE ROSS

TELLING STORIES
Tracy Chapman
(Warner)

Even on autopilot, Tracy Chapman is worth hearing. On a collection of low-impact folk-pop songs, the by-the-numbers production does little to elevate her personal, spiritual lyrics and gently passionate voice beyond the level of easy listening. This is definitely easy on the ears, but even with an Emmylou Harris duet, a lot of it is forgettable.
