Album Review: Chapman, Tracy

LET IT RAIN
By DARRYL STERDAN

LET IT RAIN
Tracy Chapman
(Elektra/Warner)

For a gal who wrote a song called Fast Car, Tracy Chapman always sounds like she's trapped on a slow boat.

Let it Rain, her sixth album, has plenty of the sweetly melodic but sombrely emotive acoustic balladry you expect.

Thankfully, the backing players -- made up of sidemen for P.J. Harvey, Beck and Tom Waits -- bring some jazzbo grit and earthy funk to the pity party. (More on Tracy Chapman)
