Album Review: The Charlatans UK

SIMPATICO
Charlatans UK soldier on
By -- Winnipeg Sun

The Charlatans UK
Simpatico
(Sanctuary/EMI)

The Charlatans UK just can't catch a break. From legal hassles over their name to the bizarre incarceration and tragic death of a founding member, these guys have been through it all over the past 17 years. Hell, their last album didn't even get released in North America.

Despite being the unluckiest band in rock since Def Leppard, though, they continue to soldier on. And, with their 10th release, they affirm the notion that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Not to mention groovier.

Simpatico captures these Manchester vets in confident form, handing down 11 tracks of rhythmically dense Britrock laced with reggae overtones and their trademark Hammond B3 swirls, capped by frontman Tim Burgess' earthy melodies and rich vocals.

Being in The Charlatans UK has never been a picnic.

But it has seldom been easier to become a fan than it is with Simpatico.
