Album Review: Cobra Starship

WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS, WE RULE THE STREETS
Cobra has bite
By -- Winnipeg Sun

Cobra Starship
While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets
(Fueled by Ramen/Warner)

Maybe you remember Cobra Starship from their supremely silly theme to Snakes on a Plane. Or not. Either way, you might be wondering: Is this band just a gag? And do I really want to hear a whole CD of them? Surprisingly, the answer to both questions is yes.

Confused? Here's the deal. Cobra Starship is basically a solo project from Midtown singer-bassist Gabe Saporta, augmented by producers and hired guns. But on While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets, that doesn't stop him from spinning a remarkably catchy set of sardonic dance-rock and pop-punk that sounds sorta like Fallout Boy or Panic! At the Disco with more wit.

Delivered with a wink and a smirk but no shortage of bite, tunes like Send My Love to the Dance Floor, I'll See You in Hell (Hey Mister DJ), The Kids are All F***ed Up and It's Amateur Night at the Apollo Creed! are a sugary alternative to the bitterness of contemporary emo.

Fangs a lot, Gabe.
