Artist: Coldplay

Coldplay unveils Cdn. tour dates
By DARRYL STERDAN, QMI Agency

Coldplay

Canadians will be the first Coldplay fans to see Mylo Xyloto in the flesh — hopefully.

The beloved British band have announced they’ll open their 2012 world tour with three Western Canadian shows.

Coldplay will kick off their North American trek April 17 at Edmonton’s Rexall Place before heading south to Calgary’s Saddledome the next night. They’ll play Rogers Arena in Vancouver on April 20, then move on to the U.S., though the quartet will return to Canada in late July for shows at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre and Montreal’s Bell Centre. More dates may be added, according to a press release.

Tickets for all Canadian shows go on sale Saturday Dec.17 at Ticketmaster. Prices weren’t released, though one online site said they’ll set you back up to $110.

Of course, this won’t be the first time Coldplay tried to start a tour in Edmonton and Calgary. Back in 2008, they planned to begin their Viva la Vida tour in Alberta, but ended up postponing the dates due to production delays. When all was said and done, the band ended up wrapping the tour in Western Canada the following year. Here’s hoping things go smoother this time.

Admittedly, once it arrived, that Viva la Vida tour did include plenty of high-tech spectacle — spherical video screens, lasers, massive balloons and even a rain of fluorescent confetti butterflies — and ended with each fan getting a free live album. I don’t know how they can top that, but you can probably expect them to try.

Mylo Xyloto, for those who haven't been paying attention, is the recently released fifth studio album from Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, the undisputed masters of swelling, arena-sized anthems. Viva la Vida won three Grammy Awards, while Mylo has earned two nominations.

Coldplay’s Canadian Mylo Xyloto Canadian tour dates:

April 17 | Edmonton | Rexall Place

April 18 | Calgary | Scotiabank Saddledome

April 20 | Vancouver | Rogers Arena

July 23 | Toronto | Air Canada Centre

July 26 | Montreal | Bell Centre
