THE CORRS
Borrowed Heaven
(Atlantic-Warner)
You'd be hard-pressed to find a lovelier, better-looking and sweeter sounding group of siblings from Ireland than The Corrs.
But their good nature, striking appearance and inviting Celtic-tinged pop sound only takes the listener so far, especially on their latest disc.
The Corrs' first studio effort in four years since In Blue finds them opting for the ultra-slick route in terms of production.
This isn't a huge surprise given they chose to work in Dublin and L.A. with Olle Romo, a close collaborator of uber-producer Mutt Lange.
One notable exception to the over-production throughout is the title track, which finds The Corrs hooking up with South African ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo for a more soulful vocal collaboration.
That song -- and the Bono-, Gavin Friday- and Maurice Seezer-composed Time Enough For Tears, a delicate, melodic ballad that was featured in Jim Sheridan's In America -- only makes you sadder for what might have been on this disc.
Otherwise, you might as well be listening to Wilson Phillips on such saccharine songs as Summer Sunshine, Long Night, Angel -- written about their late mother Jean -- Humdrum, Even If and Baby Be Brave.
Better bets with a bit more of an edge are the rollicking Hideaway, the more soulful Goodbye (again about their mom) and the Celtic instrumental Silver Strand, which closes the album.
The Corrs play The Theatre at the Air Canada Centre on Aug. 30.
