Concert Review: The Cranberries

Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Toronto - November 20, 2009
By JANE STEVENSON - Sun Media

TORONTO - The verdict on The Cranberries reunion tour, which touched down at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Friday night for a two-night stand, was that the hits by the '90s Irish pop-rock band have held up remarkably well.

And so has fiery frontwoman Dolores O' Riordan, whose huge, ethereal voice was in good shape, along with her tiny frame showed off in a black sequined mini-dress and matching sneakers, as the 38-year-old singer roamed the stage, performing her signature dance moves and connecting with the crowd.

Before imploding in 2003 due to burnout - she actually talked on Friday night about hitting "rock bottom" in 1996 - The Cranberries were one of the biggest things to come out of Ireland in the '90s, playing arenas and stadiums around the world.

But in her time away from the group, O' Riordan, who married Canadian tour manager Don Burton with whom she has three children and a second home outside Peterborough, Ont., released two solo albums, most recently 2009's No Baggage.

But instead of touring that new album on her own, O' Riordan regrouped with guitarist Noel Hogan, his brother and bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler, along with touring keyboardist-guitarist Denny DeMarchi, for a fall Cranberries tour.

Friday night's show was only the seventh date of the reunion trek and O' Riordan was clearly jazzed about playing in Toronto.

"Stand up!" she commanded the audience, who remained on their feet for the duration of the show. "Toronto is my home away from home! My little boy is here tonight. He's going to be 12 on Monday!"

The band kicked off the fast-paced 85-minute set with How from their 1993 debut, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? and all but four tunes of the 21-song set were from their '90s catalogue.

The remainder were from O' Riordan's solo career with the most unusual being a song called Lunatic which featured just O' Riordan singing very dramatically and theatrically and DeMarchi on keyboards.

Let's just call it her Bjork moment and leave it at that.

Much better solo material was Switch Off The Moment and The Journey, the latter featuring No Baggage Canadian co-producer Dan Brodbeck on guitar.

Otherwise, all eyes were on the pixie-ish and intense O' Riordan during such early standouts as Animal Instinct, Linger - this one featuring a besotted male fan on stage and gamely singing the opening notes before dropping to one knee - Wanted, Just My Imagination, When You're Gone, Daffodil Lament and I Can't Be Here With You.

The two Hogans and Lawler finally came alive in the second, more intense half of the show during Ode To My Family, Free To Decide, Waltzing Back, Salvation, Ridiculous Thoughts, Zombie and Dreams, the last two songs prompting the biggest responses of the night.
