Mitch Dorge laughed when he saw Crash Test Dummies had been included in an upcoming VH1 series 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders.

Dorge, the drummer for Winnipeg's Dummies, was amused by the fact the band's 1994 single Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm was picked at No. 78.

"It's maybe a bit harsh, but I can see where they're coming from," he says. "As far as the U.S. was concerned, Mmm Mmm ... was the one big hit that we had. Superman's Song was big in Canada and the U.K. and Germany but it wasn't that huge in the U.S."

At least the video music channel remembers the Dummies, who sold several million copies of the album God Shuffled His Feet on the strength of that single.

Which is not to say the Dummies haven't been active -- either as a group or individually. After touring Europe and North America last summer with the reconstituted band, Dorge has spent the past winter working on two new projects -- a new CD, As Trees Walking, and a new video, Mitch Dorge: Downsampling Perception.

He's launching both finished products next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Chapters -- Polo Festival.

The disc, he says, is not necessarily what Dummies or drumming fans may expect, incorporating elements of electronic and ambient sound. The video, on the other hand, he describes as "a motivational tool."

"I think I've got an opportunity and the experience to make some comments on the music industry and I want to use the launch next week to show local musicians that it's a good thing to do what they believe in. That they shouldn't worry about how to make it, they should just get out there and pound on doors with the thing that they have poured their hearts into, whatever it may be."
