On the schoolyard, the other kids thought Jeari Czapla (pronounced "Jerry Zappla") was Frank Zappa's long lost son. As it turns out, the guitarist would discover a kindred spirit in a man even more "out there" - Lenny Breau.
Releasing his debut CD, For Ella, with a show at the Yardbird Suite Saturday night, Czapla is a big Breau fan, emulating his style to the point that the tag of "Edmonton's Lenny Breau" might soon catch on. The first of many music college experiences (including the University of Manitoba and Grant MacEwan College) was at the Lenny Breau School of Music in Winnipeg, run by the late guitar legend's son Chet. Czapla walked in a novice and walked out a believer.
