Craig David, we are told by the U.K. press and U.S. publicists, is the Next Big Thing From England. Guaranteed.

Of course, the last Next Big Thing From England was Robbie Williams, and we're still waiting for our refund on that guarantee. But 20-year-old pretty boy David might stand a slightly better chance.

The soul sensation's drawing card, as ably displayed on his U.K. chart-topping debut Born to Do It, is his ability to seamlessly stitch his satiny pop vocals to the lightly insistent whump of U.K. two-step.

At its best -- like more energetic cuts such as Fill Me In and 7 Days -- it suggests an updated Stevie Wonder or Terence Trent D'Arby. Too bad those are just two cuts on an hour-long album with an unfortunate overabundance of treacly, enervating ballads.

And sadly, all those florid, featherweight dance grooves suggest something less attractive: An above-average boy-band crooner embarking on an ill-advised solo career. Next ... (More on Craig David)
