De La Soul have always liked to mix it up. With Impossible Mission: TV Series Pt. 1, the sampledelic rappers take it to a new level. This eighth studio release combines new material and old rarities into a loose, free-flowing mixtape. It's credit to the hip-hoppers' consistency that at times, it can be tough to tell the unearthed treasures from the recent recordings.
Thankfully, the De Las make it easier by putting some of the relics into context with spoken-word intros.
These historical cuts deliver some of the cooler moments -- like De La Soul Poster (which samples Sam and Dave's Soul Man) and Mindstate (an explicit joke track cut to shock their record label).
But even if some of their newer fare doesn't have quite as much flair, this disc is still a well-built bridge between De La Soul's playful past and more serious present.
Mission accomplished.
