Deftones, Staind shake up charts

New albums by The Deftones and Staind made loud debuts on this week's Canadian charts.

The Deftones new self-titled effort premiered at the No. 1 spot with album sales of 10,700, marking the highest chart position for the Calfornia quintet. Their previous studio album, 2000's "White Pony," debuted at No. 8.

Fellow hard rockers Staind also made some chart noise with their album, "14 Shades Of Grey," which entered the top 10 at No. 8 with 5,800 in sales.

It was a much closer chart battle south of the border, where Staind grabbed the top spot selling 220,000 copies, with the Deftones running a close second with 167,300 in U.S. sales.

Elsewhere in the Canadian top 10, "The Matrix Reloaded OST" (8,900) remained in second, Sean Paul's "Dutty Rock" (7,800) climbed up a spot to third, and 50 Cent's "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" (7,280) fell one notch to fourth.

Evanescence's "Fallen" (7,200) moved from sixth to fifth, Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" (6,200) placed sisxth, and Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful" (5,800) helped by the hype surrounding the latest American Idol finale, shot up from 14th last week to seventh.

The soundtrack to Hilary Duff's "Lizzie McGuire Movie" (5,300) moved rorm 16th to ninth, and The White Stripes' "Elephant" (5,000) fell from seventh to 10th.

Of note, Marilyn Manson's "The Golden Age Of Grotesque," which entered the Canadian charts at No. 1 last week, slid all the way down to No. 14. in its second week.

Other notable chart debuts included Live's "Bird Of Prey" at No. 12, the compilation "Groove Station 9" at No. 21, and Ricky Martin's "Alamas Del Silencio" at No 26.

In the U.S., Kelly Clarkson placed third followed by Evanescence in fourth, and 50 Cent in fifth.
