Album Review: Dixie Chicks

By JANE STEVENSON

Dixie Chicks
(Open Wide-Monument-Columbia)

The long-awaited follow-up to this modern country trio's 1999 release, Fly, finally arrives in stores Tuesday.

After a lengthy legal battle with their record company over royalties, the Texas-based outfit return with their trademark harmonies, energy and sass intact.

The difference this time out is a major injection of bluegrass on such poignant standouts as Travelin' Soldier, A Home and I Believe In Love, and guests like Emmylou Harris on the gorgeous ballad Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) and a faithful cover of the Stevie Nicks classic Landslide.

This 12-track collection, co-produced with lead singer Natalie Maines' father, Lloyd Maines, gets off to a fine start with the first single, Long Time Gone. Both sisters Martie Maguire (fiddle, backing vocals) and Emily Robison (banjo, dobro, backing vocals) show off their chops repeatedly on such songs as the Patty Griffin-penned Truth No. 2, the trio's own White Trash Wedding, Tortured, Tangled Hearts -- co-written by Marty Stuart -- and the lively instrumental Lil' Jack Slade.
