Julie Doiron
Woke Myself Up
(Endearing/Universal)
Tenth anniversaries can make some folks a bit wistful. And it has now been a decade since Maritime noise-rockers Eric's Trip released their final studio album and bassist Julie Doiron issued her first solo disc.
So maybe it shouldn't be a shock that the singer-songwriter strikes a slightly nostalgic pose on her seventh set Woke Myself Up. But it is a pleasant surprise -- especially for fans of her old group.
This 11-song offering finds Doiron reuniting not only with former bandmate Rick White (who produced and plays on every track here), but also with Trip drummer Mark Gaudet and guitarist Chris Thompson (who play on three tunes).
The loose, impromptu mini-reunion not only treats fans to a brief trip down memory lane; it supplies Doiron with some of her loudest and most energized songs in years. Those who prefer Julie's more intimate fare won't be disappointed, though -- this set also has plenty of the strummy alt-folk balladry and hushed troubadourism that have dominated her post-Trip days.
With the varied and accessible Woke Myself Up, Doiron -- and the rest of us -- get to enjoy the best of both worlds.
If she sticks with that game plan, her next album could already be something to look forward to.
