Hilary Duff
Dignity
(Hollywood/Universal)
She hasn't shaved her head, flashed her crotch, gone to rehab, been arrested, married a dancer or whored herself out to reality TV.
So next to the likes of Britney, Paris, Lindsay, Nicole and Jessica, 19-year-old Hilary Duff has earned the right to title her fourth album after a quality too few teen stars possess: Dignity. But she could just as easily have called it Honesty.
This is Duff's most personal and revealing album yet, with confessional self-penned lyrics that seem to address her breakup with Good Charlotte's Joel Madden, her troubles with stalkers, her new love and her soured friendships with the celebutantes above ("It's not news when you got a new bag ... C'mon, give it a rest").
Wisely, the weight of her lyrics is leavened by the lightness of the music. Dignity's 14 tracks toggle between synthy dance-pop reminiscent of Kylie and punchier pop-rock anthems that sound a bit like Avril-lite.
Hey, just because she's got self-respect doesn't mean she can't have some fun.
