TORONTO - She's still Duff enough.
Eighteen-year-old teen-pop princess Hilary Duff visited the Air Canada Centre last night in support of her greatest hits collection, Most Wanted, much to the delight of her screaming, young, female fans twirling glow-in-the-dark fluorescent green sticks.
The sold-out appearance saw Duff accompanied by green laser lights, a slick video backdrop, a five-man band -- including Canadian guitarist Jason Hook, who donned a Maple Leafs' hockey jersey during the encore, three male dancers and two female backup singers.
In other words, it had all the bells and whistles of a tween-and-teen-friendly pop arena show, albeit one without any real soul.
Duff's persona, music and stage show is harmless, friendly, professional and slightly boring -- with very little in the way of energy on the teenage singer's part, who had three see-through catwalks at her disposal -- just the way most parents of impressionable females would probably like it.
My only advice to her is to put some meat on her skinny little body.
Otherwise, you really get the feeling that all she has to do is show up on stage to elicit those piercing screams.
"Hello everybody," said Duff, after the first three songs of her 80-minute set.
"Oh my gosh, you guys are so loud tonight. It's so good to be back in Canada. I think I've spent more time in Toronto than my own house. I love it!"
Duff, who also acts and has her own clothes line, has shot several movies in our town, most recently the Cheaper By The Dozen sequel with Steve Martin and Eugene Levy last summer.
To her credit, Duff does have a little more of an edge these days when it comes to her concert clothes.
Maybe dating 26-year-old Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden has had an influence?
Last night, Duff was dressed casually in a white tank top, grey vest, black leggings, black combat boots, large hoop earrings, with her hair back in a ponytail and a headband.
She's hardly her tougher looking Canadian contemporary, Avril Lavigne, but she's getting closer -- in appearance anyway.
And Duff does have a big heart as her continued support of the tsunami victims -- their pictures were shown during the empowerment song, I Am -- more than demonstrated.
Duff's music hit its peak during uber-hits like Come Clean, Anywhere But Here, Party Up, Fly, So Yesterday, and the ballad, Someone's Watching Over Me, which found the crowd taking part in spirited singalongs.
Also good was Beat Of My Heart, the catchy, upbeat first single from Most Wanted; and the ballad Cry, which saw Duff alternately seated on a stool on her front catwalk or touching the outstretched hands of fans below on the floor.
Duff stops by MuchOnDemand today at 5 p.m. to co-host the MuchMusic show with VJs Matte Babel and Leah Miller for an hour.
Fans will have an opportunity to ask Duff questions, either by phone or by e-mail.
Most Wanted has achieved double-platinum status in Canada, where she is in the middle of touring 19 cities.
