Album Review: Duran Duran

Duran Duran back again
By JANE STEVENSON

POP TRASH
Duran Duran
(Hollywood-Universal)

Of all the '80s pop stars destined for a comeback, I would have never predicted this band given their lacklustre live performance in Toronto a few years back, not to mention their less-than-stellar 1997 album, Medazzaland.

But there are some songs to recommend on their latest release, in stores next Tuesday, and coupled with a rumoured summer date at the Molson Amphitheatre, don't be surprised if "Duranies" rear their heads once again in full force.

The standouts here are the first single, Someone Else Not Me, which recalls one of the band's prettiest pop tunes, Undone. Also along those lines is the dreamy Lady Xanax -- where do they get some of these titles from?

Less successful are strange, empty dance-pop numbers Lava Lamp, Playing With Uranium, Hallucinating Elvis, Mars Meets Venus -- singer Simon Le Bon should never attempt rapping -- and the slow-tempoed Strange To Remember, Pop Trash Movie and The Sun Doesn't Shine Forever, which just limp along.
