Matt Dusk
Back in Town
(Decca/Universal)
You gotta feel a little sorry for Matt Dusk. Clearly, the talented vocalist would love to be the reigning neo-Sinatra jazz-pop crooner on the scene.
Trouble is, Michael Buble has that gig all sewed up for the moment. What's a Rat Pack wannabe to do? Well, on his third release Back in Town, Matty wisely starts off by trying to get hip, loosening his tux collar with more contemporary fare like the zippy retro-futurism of the title cut, the vaguely trip-hoppy All About Me and the groovy dance-pop of Propellerheads' History Repeating.
Unfortunately, the new act doesn't really take -- between these obvious attempts to court a younger, hipper crowd, Dusk beats a hasty retreat to his big-band comfort zone with the usual slavishly nostalgic renditions of swingin' standards and torch ballads like The Best is Yet to Come, As Time Goes By, April Moon and Get Me to the Church on Time.
So we are left with the impression that Dusk still wants to headline in the big room -- but he's willing to sneak in through the dance club if that's the fastest route.
