LOVE AND THEFT
Bob Dylan
(Columbia-Sony)
When Bob Dylan turned 60 earlier this year, you'd have thought he was close to retirement or death, judging from the number of tributes written.
Granted, it was a benchmark birthday, but if anything proves Dylan has a lot of life left in him, it's his latest album, in stores Tuesday.
With a collection that's rollicking, rambling, rootsy and distinctly countrified, the folk-rock troubadour comes out swinging on the lead-off track (and first single) Tweedle Dee and rarely backs down.
Love And Theft is a far cry from the hushed, atmospheric musings of his last album, 1997's Time Out Of Mind, but no less an inviting listen.
Look no further than the lyrics of the shuffling, moody High Water: "I got a crave and love for blazing speed / Got a hopped-up Mustang Ford, Jump into the wagon love / Throw your panties overboard."
Other highlights range from the kicky, Western swing of Summer Days to the sweet and loungey By And By to the Delta blues of Lonesome Day Blues and Cry A While.
Both Dylan's record label and Web site say he'll play the Air Canada Centre on Nov. 8, but no on-sale date has been announced yet.
