Eminem
Curtain Call
(Universal)
Rick Nelson said it best: You can't please everyone. And that's even less likely when you're a larger-than-life character such as Eminem, whose following is fairly evenly divided between those who love the hits and those who feel the true artist can be found only on more obscure album tracks.
Slim Shady has, however, made a bold attempt to sidestep that challenge here, by issuing a CD chock full of songs we know and love like the precious Stan and the fiery Lose Yourself, alongside a bonus EP of the hard stuff -- Kill You, Criminal, etc. -- that dig deeper into the great man's soul.
Stripped of the EP, this is a predictable enough journey through Eminem's albums, more or less spread evenly, but with a justifiable emphasis on the career-making The Marshall Mathers LP. The bonus tracks on the album add little to the legend (particularly the redundant live recording of Stan featuring Elton John as Dido).
It's almost impossible at this point to divorce the performer from the legend, or to easily reconcile his maudlin tributes to his daughter with his over-the-top hostility towards his parents. But that's for the analysts to decide.
For those who want a handy one-stop-shopping overview of the career of one of the most important artists of the past decade, Curtain Call holds the answers to all of your questions.
