Album Review: 54-40

CASUAL VIEWIN'
54-40's new one solid
By JANE STEVENSON

CASUAL VIEWIN'
54-40
(Columbia-Sony)

Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan's theories about "the global village" inspired this veteran Vancouver rock act on its latest outing, in stores Tuesday.

54-40 travelled the world in 20 days, which in turn inspired a solid album of equal parts rock and pop, with the occasional exotic departure.

Among the album's standouts is the folkier Blue Sky, and the similarly poetic, keyboards-and-brass-pumped Roll Up Rule. Also good is the pretty ballad Watching You, the atmospheric and trippy Speak What You Feel and the poppy love song, You The One.

Still, this 14-track collection, co-produced by Osborne and drummer Matt Johnson, doesn't measure up overall to the astonishing beauty of 54-40's previous studio album, 1998's Since When.

The band plays the Humble and Fred fest on Saturday at Historic Fort York.
