RADIO LOVE SONGS: THE SINGLES COLLECTION
54-40
(Sony)
Maybe it's my West Coast upbringing, but I've always had a soft spot for this veteran pop-rock outfit from Vancouver.
I grew up with them back in the days when they were a punk rock trio who made their New Year's Eve 1981 debut at the legendary Smilin' Buddha Cabaret.
54-40's latest collection amasses the best of their 20-year career with two new tracks. The rollicking pop-rock tune Love Rush and the harder edged Plenty Emotion get things started.
Elsewhere, the singles begin with their most recent, as in Unbend and Casual Viewin' from 2000's Casual Viewin', although things quickly go out of chronological order with 1986's I Go Blind, more recently made into a huge hit by Hootie And The Blowfish.
The standouts for me, though, are slightly sleazy rock songs like Love You All, She-La, Nice To Luv You and the elegant folk number One Gun.
Nothing would make me happier than if 54-40 scored a hit with Love Rush.
