Album Review: Nelly Furtado

WHOA, NELLY!
By DARRYL STERDAN

WHOA, NELLY!
Nelly Furtado
(DreamWorks/Universal)

Toronto singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado has come from straight outta nowhere to be pop music's newest It Girl. It's no mystery -- she's a sultry babe who doesn't mind showing her bellybutton; she writes her own material; and she has a voice that incorporates a little-girl pout and an earthy sexuality. Fair enough. Even so, after spinning her debut Whoa, Nelly!, we think the hype machine is working overtime. Most of these tracks are nothing more than pleasantly poppy, with Ms. F spinning soulful hip-pop melodies a la TLC or Luscious Jackson over a quirky bed of beeping, clattering hippie-slack studio tomfoolery. Furtado has potential, and we hope she lives up to it, but we'll hold our horses before we crown her the new queen of pop.
