Album Review: Gang Of Four

RETURN THE GIFT
Going over old ground
By -- Winnipeg Sun

Gang of Four
Return the Gift
(V2/Sony BMG)

You've heard the expression Take it From the Top? Post-punk icons Gang of Four have really taken it to heart.

For their latest comeback album Return the Gift -- their first disc in more than 20 years to feature all the original members -- the influential British foursome go back to Square 1 and re-record 14 songs from their classic '80s discs. Natural's Not in It, Anthrax, I Love a Man in a Uniform, At Home He's a Tourist, To Hell with Poverty and Ether are all here, delivered with the spiky guitars and funky swagger that bands like Franz Ferdinand have taken to the bank.

What's harder to find, however, is the point of the exercise. Sure, the production this time improves on the wet cardboard-box drum sound of the old recordings. And even though they're a generation older, neither the songs nor the band have lost a step. But surely a live set could have made those points without leaving the sour taste of self-cannibalization in your mouth.

Bottom line: Anybody who wants to hear the old songs can get the old albums.

Anybody who wants to hear if Gang of Four still have anything to say is going to have to keep waiting.
