Giant Sand is one of those bands that straddles up like a spider, and the music creeps in on as many legs.
Is it country? Sometimes. Rock? They dabble. Jazz? Some of that, too. Let's just call them decidedly post-postmodern then, or not call them anything at all. Through 20 years of playing, the band's devilish figurehead, Howe Gelb, based in Tucson, Arizona, has danced with such wide sources as Edmonton's Old Reliable, Juliana Hatfield and Robert Plant. Plant came together with Gelb to do a tribute album to their lost friend, Rainer Ptacek, part of the old Sand lineup.
