Spewing hate in song is nothing new.
Check your history and you'll find a million and one tracks inspired by someone who done someone wrong -- ex-lovers, parents, managers, former bandmates.
But the sledgehammer-subtle song I (Expletive) Hate You, on agro American metal act Godsmack's latest release Faceless, has to be an original -- it's probably the only such missive written about a home builder.
"He built a new house a few years ago and he's been going through hell with it," says Godsmack guitarist Tony Rambola about the group's vocalist and lyricist Sully Erna.
"While we were in Florida (recording the album), he had to do everything by phone, dealing with the lawyers because the lawsuit's going on.
"So he was freaking out one day about the whole thing and that's when he walked out to cool off and he came back with those lyrics and said, 'What do you guys think of this?' "
Apparently, they liked it a great deal.
In fact, according to Rambola, there wasn't much surrounding the experience of recording their third major-label release that the Boston-based quartet didn't enjoy.
The five months they spent living together in a rented house and laying down the tracks for Faceless gave them an opportunity to bond with new drummer Shannon Larkin and focus on following up their two previous million-plus sellers.
And even though the band's last release, Awake, earned them a Grammy nomination and is closing in on the three-million mark, Rambola says pressure to repeat never came into play during the Faceless sessions.
"I guess you can't really do that to yourself," he says. "The way I look at it, as long as we're working and selling records and able to sell tickets, then we have a job.
"I'm pretty realistic about it."
