Album Review: Gomez

IN OUR GUN
By DARRYL STERDAN

IN OUR GUN
Gomez
(Virgin / EMI)

When they debuted in 1998, Gomez amazed folks by being five white British lads who sounded like five old bluesmen from Mississippi -- someplace they had never been. Now they've been around the block a few times. But on their eclectic third full-length In Our Gun, they continue to amaze, chiefly because their sound and style have expanded along with their world-view. Incorporating everything from the lumpy, barking-sax skronk of Morphine to the spacey funk backbeats and burbling synthesizers of trip-hop and techno, tracks like Shot Shot and Ruff Stuff take their style in satisfying, fascinating new directions without forsaking the gritty beats, buzzy guitars, swampy grooves and gruff vocals that are the cornerstone of their Beefhearty sound. With In Our Gun, Gomez have reinvented the blues for the new millennium -- again. A bang-up job, lads. (More on: Gomez).
