Album Review: Al Green

I CAN'T STOP
By JANE STEVENSON

I CAN'T STOP
Al Green
(Blue Note-EMI)

This legendary soul singer-turned-gospel artist/preacher has recorded his first non-secular album since 1976's Have A Good Time.

And he does it with just the right collaborator.

On his new album, Green reunites with producer/arranger Willie Mitchell at his Royal Recording Studios in Memphis -- the scene of their '70s classics Tired Of Being Alone, Let's Stay Together and Love And Happiness, among others.

The duo, whose eight albums together sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, even use the same vocal booth and the same microphone -- specifically reserved for Green -- and reconvened many of the original musicians who appeared on their early sessions together.

That esteemed cast included guitarist Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, bassist Leroy Rodgers, tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, trombonist Jack Hale and backup singers Donna Rhodes, Charlie Chalmers and Sandra Rhodes.

The results are pretty glorious, old-school soul, even if the material doesn't quite reach the heights of Green's all-time great songs.

Some tunes come awfully close, though, like the uplifting, feel-good title track, I've Been Waitin' On You and Million To One, alongside the slower-tempoed Play To Win, Rainin' In My Heart and My Problem Is You, all featuring Green's soaring, passionate vocals accompanied by exquisite musicianship.
