WARNING
By JANE STEVENSON
WARNING Green Day (Warner) After 1997's excellent sonic departure Nimrod, this Berkeley, Calif., trio returns to their more basic pop-punk sound on their latest album, in stores Tuesday. And while it isn't a complete disaster, the end result is sadly underwhelming. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has said he was listening to a lot of vintage Bob Dylan before recording Warning but there isn't much in the way of classic folk-rock here, even if a little mouth organ is thrown into the opening of the otherwise straight-ahead pop song, Hold On. The only real standouts are the Klezmer-meets-polka tune Misery, and the album-ending, slice-of-life song, Macy's Day Parade. Castaway, Deadbeat Holiday, Waiting and Minority do, however, have some real energy and bite. I guess at this point -- Warning is their sixth album -- I just expect more from Green Day, who are consistently solid in concert. Track Listing
