CLOCK WITHOUT HANDS
Nanci Griffith
(Elektra-Warner)
Inspired by her work with the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, this self-proclaimed "folkabilly" artist explores that experience, along with others, on her latest 14-song collection.
Traveling Through This Part Of You, for example, is a poignant retracing of the steps of her ex-husband Eric Taylor -- a Vietnam veteran and a songwriter for her, Lyle Lovett and others -- during visits to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Similarly melancholy is Roses On The 4th Of July, a duet with longtime friend Michael Johnson, while Pearl's Eye View is a more rocking ode to pioneering female war photographer Georgette "Dickey" Chapelle.
Two songs also deal with family illness, the tearjerker Last Song For Mother and a cover of In The Wee Small Hours, Griffith's mother's favourite.
Good intentions aside, there is a slightly overproduced quality to a lot of the album, with those duties handled by Griffith and Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams). Stripped-down and simple may have been the better way to go.
Her breezy cover of James Hooker's Cotton or the Hooker collaboration Shaking Out The Snow are good examples where less is more.
