Ireland has been very good to Canadian singer Emm Gryner.
After contributing the track Blackwinged Bird to the best-selling charity CD, The Bake Sale -- which featured members of Irish groups Snow Patrol, Bell X1, The Thrills and The Divine Comedy -- Gryner's songwriting caught the attention of a new crop of music fans across the pond.
One of those fans just happened to be one of this generation's most successful rock stars.
"Bono mentioned that he wished that he wrote one of my songs," says Gryner, who comes from an Irish-Filipino background.
When asked by music magazine Q about which songs from the past 20 years he wished he had written, the U2 frontman named Almighty Love from Gryner's 2006 album The Summer of High Hopes alongside tracks by Bob Dylan and Oasis.
"I just thought it was great. For someone like him to find that song is a testament to, well first off, how small Ireland is, but it's also nice to know that my music can reach someone like him. Now it would be nice if he would record it."
Gryner admits Bono's stamp of approval came as somewhat of a relief.
"At least people have something else to ask me about other than David Bowie," says the 33-year-old, who toured the world as part of Bowie's band 10 years ago.
Gryner recently returned from a seven-week jaunt to Europe promoting her latest album, Goddess, and is currently touring across Canada. She performs tonight at the Marquee Room.
"I like touring and it was great to see Europe," she says.
"But sometimes I don't like being away from home for too long. Now I tend to pick a few places to play, spend two weeks out on the road and come home."
Goddess is a more moody, instropective record for Gryner, who is best known for the catchy and poppy singles Summerlong from her 1998 CD Public and Beautiful Things from 2002's Asian Blue.
Gryner says while she's happy with the album, she would like to rock out a bit more.
