Songs of Love and Death
Emm Gryner
(Outside Music)
Emm Gryner continues the theme of love, death and covers by completely reshaping 11 songs from Ireland by bands both rare and universal, like Horslips, Thin Lizzy, the Corrs, Ash and Gilbert O'Sullivan (some may recognize his song Burton Cummings also did, Nothing Rhymed).
Often, Gryner sticks to a low-key, maudlin, breathy whisper - Tori Amos lite, if you will, without the slashed wrists. It's why we like her and she sticks to it.
A couple songs really jump out, though. Dearg Doom, wrapped up nicely in harpsichord, piano and a fuzzy electronic beat is full of sexy menace. The Virgin Prunes' Bau-Dachong is another troubling song, and Gryner singing "if I die, I die" is really striking. Almost a one-woman band throughout the CD, she throws more industrial beats behind Kate McGarrigle playing a haunting banjo. She does a nice Julie Ocean by the Undertones, a mournful song you'd probably recognize if you heard it. And you should. Gryner, like all of us in own way, is exploring her cultural roots with her music. I'm glad she did.
